Who you are when the title comes off

A title gets people to do what you say. It does not get them to tell you the truth, bring you the problem early, or stay in the hard conversation instead of nodding and leaving. Those things run on trust, and trust is built in the moments no org chart can see.

The leaders people actually follow tend to be the same person whether or not the badge is on. They don't abandon what they know to keep the peace, and they don't need the room to agree in order to feel steady. That consistency is what makes it safe for everyone else to be honest.

So the question I keep coming back to isn't about your role. It's simpler and harder: who are you when the title comes off, and would your team recognize that person?
