When a company underperforms, the instinct is to look at strategy. Sometimes that's right. Far more often, the strategy is fine and the execution is bleeding out through a hundred small human leaks: unclear expectations, mistrust between two teams, a decision nobody wants to own, a conversation everyone is politely avoiding.
None of these show up on a dashboard. They show up as things taking longer than they should, for reasons no one can quite name. That's the tell. When capable people keep producing slow, hedged, cautious work, the problem usually isn't capability. It's the operating environment they're working inside.
You can't fix what you can't see, so the first move is always to make the invisible friction visible, name it plainly, and then decide what it's actually costing you. Most leaders are surprised by the number.
